Thanks, Mom

Thanks, Mom

Messages
This Sunday, we celebrate our moms. For all the times they sat in the school parking lot waiting for us to finish band practice, washed mud out of our jeans when we took our bicycle through the shortcut, slipped us a peanut butter sandwich under the table when it was liver and onions for supper, and risked catching every childhood disease known to man so that we could see the pediatrician, we say, "Thanks, Mom." Moms pray even when everyone else has given up. This week, we will see in 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 how each of us can pray for God's power and glory in the lives of those we love. See you Sunday! Talking Points

Talking Points

We had a problem with our computer system several years ago. I tried to work with the technicians of our information provider, but we had an obvious disconnect in our communication. They knew what they were talking about, but I didn't have a clue. Eventually, we hired an IT company to figure out how to get things fixed. In about an hour, they had not only identified the problem, but knew how to explain to the communications company personnel exactly what needed to be done. I basically just nodded a lot. It's good to have someone who can speak on your behalf. In 1 John 2:1, the Bible explains the extraordinary truth that Jesus speaks for us. Join us this Sunday to find out how Jesus speaks for you. Follow the Light

Cats love to chase light. Whether its a flashlight or laser pointer, most cats will chase a light across a floor until a) they get tired of the game; b) their owner gets tired of the game or; c) the batteries run out. According to the good folks at PetMD.com, this is because cats eyes are very sensitive to movement, and their instinct is to stalk, pounce, and eat. The light satisfies two of these requirements which will either give your cat hours of playful exercise or make them a very frustrated feline. The folks at PetMD suggest giving them a cat treat at the end of the game. Good plan, much better than having an angry cat attack your foot. Following the darkness of this world only leads to…

Evening Stroll

Marsha and I decided to take a walk through the neighborhood. It sounded like a great idea, but what we didn't realize was that a front had moved through the area and the temperature had dropped twenty degrees in the last hour. Our leisurely stroll around the neighborhood turned into an Olympic fast walk around half a block. There wasn't much time for conversation, which was fine. Our faces were frozen solid by the time we got home. Still, we have persevered and taken more walks (although now we check the weather before we leave). Walking together provides a great opportunity for conversation. John understood the importance of walking together. Exiled on the Isle of Patmos, John understood the significance of living life in relationship. This week, we look at…

What Does It Mean?

What Does It Mean?

Spring is upon us. Everyone has their favorite weather indicator: The "wooly bear" caterpillar - the wider the middle stripe, the milder the weather to come. The higher hornets build their nests, the deeper the snow will be that winter. Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning. If the groundhog see's his shadow, ten more weeks of winter. For the most part, those signs have nothing to do with the weather. Colossians 3:1-3 describes a sign that has far more meaning. What does the Resurrection of Christ mean for you and me? Come celebrate Easter at NHBC this Sunday and find out! Hear this message at NHBC Media

Sacrifice

Sacrifice

Baseball season is just around the corner. From T-ball to the majors, the great American pastime will soon be in full swing (no pun intended). In my short baseball career, I perfected the art of an essential talent for the game - the sacrifice bunt. According to the Glossary of MLB.com, "A sacrifice bunt occurs when a player is successful in his attempt to advance a runner (or multiple runners) at least one base with a bunt." The glossary continues, "A sacrifice bunt does not count against a player's batting average or on-base percentage, as the decision to sacrifice often isn't made by the player." This was always the case with me. I was never intentionally trying to sacrifice my turn at bat to advance a base runner. I wasn't…

Danger, Will Robinson!

Danger, Will Robinson!

Netflix recently announced that it will release a remake of the 1960's science fiction series "Lost in Space." I vaguely remember watching the program, and like most people, remember the classic phrase, "Danger Will Robinson!" The line (spoken by the robot B9 to the Robinson family son Will) only occurs in one episode, though the robot frequently yelled "Danger, Danger" without Will's name. Still, the phrase became iconic through the years - as well as waving your arms (or vacuum cleaner hoses if you want real authenticity). Warnings of danger, with our without a robot, are important. Deuteronomy 9:6 provides a significant warning not only for the nation of Israel, but for us as well. Join us this week as we explore the danger of pride. See you Sunday! Hear…

What is the most important thing you will do today? Go to work? Come home from work? Quit your job, join the circus, realize that joining the circus was a really bad idea, get your job back and come home from work? All are significant (well, except for the circus thing) and all are important, but they are not the most important thing you will do today. Join us this Sunday as we discover the most important thing you will do today in Deuteronomy 8:19-20. See you Sunday! Hear this message at NHBC Media

Amazon, the internet retail giant, has a wonderful tool, the "buy it again" button. If you have made a purchase in the past and want to buy it again, click on the button, and two days later it appears on your doorstep. I appreciate the value of this service after driving all over town trying to find a pair of shoes. I have a hard time finding shoes that fit, so when I do, I buy the same pair over and over again. It doesn't make a great fashion statement, but at least my feet don't hurt when I walk. Purchasing the same pair, however, means I have to remember where I bought them. Reviewing a parade of shoe stores is not my favorite way to spend a Saturday. So…

A quote, often attributed to Harry Truman, simply states, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." It sounds like something President Truman would say, and it expresses a sentiment that people in Washington, and pretty much everywhere else, seem to have: you can't trust anyone. Moses may have felt that way sometimes. Trying to lead the people of Israel through the wilderness was sometimes like herding cats. The minute Moses turned his back, someone was complaining about the manna, threatening to go back to Egypt, or building a golden calf. Through it all, Moses learned a great truth. God is always faithful. This week, we take a look at Deuteronomy 7:9-11, where Moses expresses this important truth - we can always rely on the faithfulness of God.…
