Our Story

National Heights enjoys a rich history and continues to celebrate its wonderful heritage. Founded in July 1889 as the third Baptist church in Springfield, the church has experienced a blessed ministry. Formerly known as the East Avenue Baptist Church, the building was relocated to its present location in 1979 and adopted the National Heights name. NHBC continues to glorify Christ by encouraging people to Know God, Grow to be like Jesus, and Go on mission for Christ.

Our Long Range Planning Committee recognized the need for a comprehensive study of future needs. The committee recommended that the church form two teams to study how we can meet these needs: the Ministry Study Team (see the Ministry Study “Next Steps” report here) and the Facility Study Team.

The Facility Study Team determined the three areas of most need in the NHBC facility – increased security for our ministry to children, increased worship and classroom space for our youth ministry, and an entrance facing National Avenue to welcome our community. The Envision Campaign is in response to these needs, with the desire to continue the heritage of ministry at NHBC.

Our Vision

We have exciting days ahead at National Heights. God has provided an ideal location for reaching the people of North Springfield and the surrounding area. The current facility has served this community well, providing a place for families to come together and worship the Savior. As we prepare for the generations to come, we want to continue to provide the physical resources to effectively reach children, youth, and adults with the spiritual truths of God’s Word.

As we prepare to make new additions to our current facility, it is imperative we see beyond the physical needs of the building to the spiritual possibilities. Imagine middle school and high school students gathering to worship Christ and study the scripture, smiling faces welcoming preschoolers and children as they come to learn about God’s love, and guests immediately making connections to our ministries as they enter the building. Imagine all that God can do as we design new spaces for every age to interact with the scripture and with each other.

The Project:

  • New youth worship area, classrooms, and fellowship area

  • Preschool and Children area in to one secure location

  • New welcome/check-in desk for families

  • New main entrance facing National Avenue

  • New welcome area with guest kiosk and coffee bar

  • Remodeled and enlarged main restrooms

  • Auditorium sound improvements

Our Purpose

In order for National Heights to continue to reach new generations for Christ, we need to update some of the space in our church to meet the needs of growing families. National Heights has always been faithful to respond to the needs of the community, and we want to continue that great heritage.

Our church has launched a Capital Stewardship Campaign entitled Envision: Reaching Future Generations for the Glory of Christ. The campaign will aid us in preparing to do what only God can do. With a renewed youth facility, a nurturing and secure preschool and children area and a new guest welcome area, we can continue to impact the lives of families in the years to come. These exciting possibilities bring us a new challenge. To complete our project, we will need to raise $1.2 million.

You can be a part of this awesome step forward for Christ:

  • Thank God for His Providence.

  • Ask God how much He would have you to give.

  • Be obedient and give as the Lord leads.
